Synopsis

Fox spirits who fall in love with scholars, Taoist priests who bend the laws of nature, ghosts who sit the imperial exams of the underworld and mortals who stumble into the courts of immortals. Written in the 17th century by Pu Songling and translated in 1880 by Herbert A. Giles, these 164 tales are a classic of Chinese supernatural fiction and one of the old roots of today's xianxia. Each chapter is one complete story, followed by the translator's original notes.
